In a significant turn of events, the Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Abbas Ansari, son of the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in connection with a case related to his arms license. The decision came on Monday, March 18, providing major relief to Ansari, who had challenged the order of the Allahabad High Court in the apex court. The case was listed for hearing in February and subsequently heard on the scheduled date.
Kapil Sibal, representing Abbas Ansari, argued in the Supreme Court highlighting that a Unique Identification Number for the import license was issued in 2015 by the concerned department. He pointed out discrepancies in the FIRs filed against Ansari, noting that one of the incidents mentioned occurred before Abbas was even born, and during the time of the other FIR, Abbas was merely six years old.
Prior to this, in February, a bench led by Justice BR Gavai had postponed the hearing, granting more time for the submission of a response to the Uttar Pradesh government’s affidavit as requested by Ansari’s lawyer. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had earlier rejected Abbas Ansari’s bail plea in the arms license case in 2022.
