The Supreme Court has received a comprehensive status report from the CBI concerning the heinous crime at RG Kar Medical College, where a female doctor was raped and subsequently murdered. The apex court had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident on August 20 and demanded thorough investigations from both the CBI and the West Bengal government.
During the recent hearing, the bench scrutinized the actions taken by the authorities since the tragedy. The Bengal government’s legal team, consisting of 21 lawyers, presented their findings, juxtaposed against the five lawyers representing the central government.
The court expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of doctors and issued a directive for the establishment of a National Task Force dedicated to enhancing security protocols in medical institutions nationwide. Moreover, the bench rebuked the Bengal police for failing to secure the crime scene effectively, which could potentially compromise the ongoing investigation.
Justice spotlighted former principal Sandeep Ghosh’s delayed response, questioning why several hours passed before the FIR was filed. The court also criticized the handling of the victim’s body, noting that her family was forced to wait hours to see her, reflecting a lack of sensitivity and urgency in dealing with the aftermath of the crime.
