Calcutta High Court Demands Case Diary in RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case

The Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday, directed the West Bengal government to submit the case diary relating to the investigation of the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This order is part of the court’s response to petitions for a more transparent and closely monitored investigation into the tragic incident.

The woman, a postgraduate trainee at the hospital, was found deceased inside a seminar hall last Friday, leading to shock and outrage within the community. Her parents have petitioned the High Court, seeking a court-monitored probe into the case. Additionally, several public interest litigations (PILs) have been filed, calling for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), signaling widespread distrust in the local handling of the case.

During the session, Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, leading a division bench that included Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, pointed out potential gaps in the ongoing investigation, notably the absence of any recorded statement from Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of RG Kar Medical College. The justices also questioned the rapid reinstatement of Ghosh as principal of another major medical institution, Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, just hours after his resignation amidst the unfolding crisis.

In a critical observation, the court demanded both the resignation and the appointment letters of Ghosh be presented at the next hearing, scheduled for 1 pm. This move underscores the court’s intent to scrutinize not just the criminal investigation but also the administrative decisions that followed the incident.
