Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Nine Advocates as Judges of Calcutta High Court

In a significant move to augment the judicial strength of one of India’s oldest High Courts, the Supreme Court Collegium has approved the elevation of nine advocates as Judges of the High Court at Calcutta.

The decision was finalized during the Collegium’s meetings held on May 11 and 12, 2026. The recommendations follow the constitutional process where the Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India, evaluates candidates for the High Court bench based on their professional standing, integrity, and legal acumen.

The Recommended Candidates

The official statement released by the Supreme Court lists the following advocates for appointment:

  1. Shri Indranil Roy
  2. Shri Aryak Dutt
  3. Shri Atarup Banerjee
  4. Shri Sandip Kumar De
  5. Shri Partha Pratim Roy
  6. Shri Sudip Deb
  7. Shri Anuj Singh
  8. Shri Arjun Ray Mukherjee
  9. Shri Rishad Medora

The proposal for these appointments will now be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice. Following the standard procedure, the names will be sent to the President of India for formal appointment. Once the Presidential warrants are issued and the notification is published in the Official Gazette, the advocates will be sworn in as Judges of the Calcutta High Court.

This batch of recommendations is expected to address the existing vacancies at the Calcutta High Court, which has been functioning with a significant backlog of cases. The inclusion of nine practitioners from the bar is seen as a step toward strengthening the court’s capacity to deliver timely justice.
