The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed a live-in couple seeking protection of their life and liberty to appear before the concerned station house officer (SHO) once every 15 days for at least three months. The court also asked the woman to speak to her parents daily and keep them informed about her well-being.
Justice Alok Jain passed the directions on September 17 after interacting with both petitioners, who had approached the High Court alleging threats from private respondents named in their petition.
The court recorded that the woman did not appear to be fully aware of her partner’s background and directed the couple to ensure that their mobile numbers remained operational and that their addresses were properly communicated to the SHO concerned.
Court Interacts With Couple
The petitioners appeared before the court following an earlier order dated September 11. After interacting with them, Justice Jain observed in the September 17 order that the woman was yet to understand the nuances of life.
The petition had been filed seeking directions to the authorities to protect the couple’s life and liberty from the private respondents.
During the hearing, the state informed the court that the representation submitted by the petitioners on August 25 had already been examined. Statements of the woman’s parents were recorded, and the authorities found no threat.
Woman Asked to Keep Parents Informed
Taking into account what it described as the tender age of the petitioners, the High Court directed the woman to communicate with her parents every day and keep them updated about her well-being. The order did not specify the ages of either petitioner.
The court also gave the woman’s parents liberty to immediately approach the concerned SHO if they developed any apprehension regarding her well-being.
In such an event, the SHO was directed to cross-check and verify the woman’s well-being.
