The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Delhi Police Crime Branch to submit a status report on its investigation into the death of Delhi Judicial Services officer Aman Sharma, who was found dead at his residence in South Delhi on May 2.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notice to the Delhi Police, seeking information on the progress of the investigation.
The court is examining the matter through suo motu proceedings initiated on October 30. The case is titled In Re: The Suspicious Death of Judicial Officer (Ex-Judge) Aman Sharma.
Sharma’s death had prompted allegations from his family that he faced prolonged mental harassment from his wife, who is also a judicial officer, and his in-laws. He allegedly died by suicide.
FIR Registered Following Father’s Complaint
Delhi Police registered an FIR against Sharma’s wife after receiving a complaint from his father. The case invokes Sections 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to Sharma’s family, he had been subjected to sustained mental harassment and was under considerable pressure for nearly two months before his death.
The investigation was subsequently handed over to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, whose progress the Supreme Court has now sought to examine.
Sharma Joined Delhi Judicial Services in 2021
Sharma graduated in law in 2018 and entered the Delhi Judicial Services in 2021.
At the time of his death, he was serving as secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) at Karkardooma Courts. He had assumed the position in October 2025.
The Supreme Court’s latest direction requires the investigating agency to place the status of its probe before the bench as part of the ongoing suo motu proceedings.
