In a Judicial development, the Central Government has officially announced the transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed from the Allahabad High Court to the Madras High Court. The notification, released on September 20, confirms the President’s decision, made in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, to move Justice Ahmed to the southern bench.
The formal notification stated: “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Shamim Ahmed, Judge of Allahabad High Court, to be a Judge of the Madras High Court and to direct him to assume charge of his office in the Madras High Court.”
This decision comes following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on August 30 to transfer Justice Ahmed. Initially proposed on August 21, 2024, the recommendation was met with a request from Justice Ahmed for reconsideration. However, the collegium upheld its original decision, rejecting the request for reevaluation.
