Centre Notifies Appointment of Five Additional Judges as Permanent Judges of the Madras High Court

The Central government has officially notified the appointment of five additional judges as permanent members of the Madras High Court, marking a significant development in the judiciary of Tamil Nadu.

The official notification issued on this date states, In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint the following esteemed legal professionals as Judges of the Madras High Court with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices:

1. Smt. Lekshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri

2. Shri Pillaipakkam Bahukutumbi Balaji

3. Shri Kandhasami Kulandaivelu Ramakrishnan

4. Smt. Ramachandran Kalaimathi

5. Smt. K Govindarajan Thilakavadi

This decision follows the recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium on September 10, 2024, which endorsed making the five additional judges permanent. Earlier, on April 29, 2024, the Madras High Court Collegium had unanimously resolved in favor of their permanent appointments—a resolution that was supported by both the Chief Minister and the Governor of Tamil Nadu after consultation with a judge of the Supreme Court.
