The Delhi High Court has given conditional approval for Delhi University to proceed with the vote counting for its Student Union elections, provided it verifies the successful cleanup of the campus by students. The decision came after a halt was called on the counting process due to significant defacement of the university and nearby public properties.
Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, who observed the extent of the damage, have set a deadline for the counting process to be completed by November 26, contingent on the cleanup of remaining affected sites. This directive was issued during a hearing on Monday, where the court addressed the actions of students during the election period.
Although the majority of the north and south campus areas were cleaned by the candidates themselves, residual graffiti and posters remain on properties adjacent to the university. The candidates’ counsel assured the court that these remnants would be cleared promptly.
The plea that initiated this legal scrutiny was filed by advocate Prashant Manchanda, who sought action against the prospective Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) candidates and their organizations for damaging and defacing public property. This included the widespread placement of posters, hoardings, and graffiti.
