The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition filed by a retired Air Force officer seeking legal action against the organisers of the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” rally in Delhi for allegedly inciting violence.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana scheduled the matter for hearing later this week after the petitioner’s counsel requested an urgent listing on Monday.
The petition asks the apex court to establish accountability for the event’s leaders and requests a uniform national policy regarding arrests and First Information Report (FIR) registrations in the aftermath of the protest. During the listing request, the petitioner’s lawyer stated that the organisers continue to make reckless statements and provoke social acrimony despite lenient government action.
Background of the July 20 Demonstration
The legal filing follows a large-scale demonstration on July 20, when thousands of predominantly young protesters assembled in central Delhi. The crowd attempted to breach police barricades to march toward Parliament, demanding the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy. Security forces utilized tear gas and lathi charges to prevent demonstrators from advancing.
