The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on March 24, 2026, has approved the proposals for the appointment of several Additional Judges as Permanent Judges in the High Courts of Chhattisgarh and Madras. The decisions, communicated through official statements, mark a significant step in regularizing the judicial strength of these two major High Courts.
Appointments in the High Court of Chhattisgarh
The Collegium has approved the proposals for the appointment of five Additional Judges as Permanent Judges in the High Court of Chhattisgarh. The judges recommended for permanent appointment are:
- Shri Justice Sachin Singh Rajput
- Shri Justice Radhakishan Agrawal
- Shri Justice Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal
- Shri Justice Bibhu Datta Guru
- Shri Justice Amitendra Kishore Prasad
Appointments in the Madras High Court
In the same meeting, the Collegium also approved the proposal for the appointment of three Additional Judges as Permanent Judges in the Madras High Court. The judges recommended are:
- Ms. Justice R. Poornima
- Shri Justice M. Jothiraman
- Dr. (Smt.) Justice Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete
The appointment of Additional Judges as Permanent Judges is governed by the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP). Additional Judges are typically appointed for a period of two years. Before the expiry of this term, the Collegium of the respective High Court evaluates their performance and makes a recommendation to the Supreme Court Collegium for their appointment as Permanent Judges.
The Supreme Court Collegium, comprising the Chief Justice of India and the most senior judges, reviews these recommendations based on judicial performance, integrity, and reported judgments. Once approved by the Collegium, the recommendations are sent to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for processing, after which the President of India issues the formal warrants of appointment.
These appointments are expected to provide greater stability to the benches of the Chhattisgarh and Madras High Courts, aiding in the efficient disposal of cases and addressing the pending caseload.
