In response to the catastrophic landslides in Wayanad District, the Kerala High Court has taken a proactive step by appointing an amicus curiae to oversee the examination of environmental audit reports and investigate the geological stability of the region.
During Friday’s hearing, a division bench consisting of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and V M Syam Kumar issued directives to involve key national geological and scientific agencies in the case. The court has called upon the Geological Survey of India, the National Centre for Earth Science Studies, and the Survey of India, along with the Department of Science and Technology under the central government, to contribute to a comprehensive study.
The court specifically requested a detailed report encompassing all studies conducted up to 2022 regarding the regions affected by landslides. This move comes amidst increasing concerns over the safety and environmental stability of twelve districts in Kerala, identified as being particularly susceptible to landslides.
