In a significant judicial development, Azam Khan, a prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party and MP, was acquitted by a Rampur MP-MLA court on Wednesday in a case concerning the forcible eviction and demolition of houses in Dungarpur locality. This case dates back to 2016 when the Samajwadi Party was in power in Uttar Pradesh.
Despite this acquittal, Khan will continue to be incarcerated at Sitapur prison, where he is being held in connection with several other legal matters. The case for which Khan was acquitted was initially registered in 2019 under the governance of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting a politically charged backdrop.
The court proceedings, which were concluded earlier, culminated in a judgment on Wednesday, absolving Khan and five other co-accused of all charges in this particular instance. Due to health issues, Khan was unable to attend the court in person and participated in the hearing via video-conference.
District government counsel Seema Rana confirmed that the MP-MLA court exonerated Khan along with the five others involved in the matter. This decision removes one legal hurdle for Khan, although his continued detention on other charges means his legal battles are far from over.
