The Supreme Court on Thursday sent a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding alleged inconsistencies in the calculation of marks for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Undergraduate exam 2024. The notice was prompted by a petition from a popular learning application, which raised concerns about the “inconsistent” evaluation on the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets used during the exam.
A vacation bench comprising Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti has called for a response from the NTA by July 8. This date has also been set for the hearing of this petition along with other related cases.
The petition highlights a significant issue regarding the distribution of OMR sheets to candidates who participated in the examination. It claims that many students did not receive their OMR sheets, which are crucial for candidates to verify their answers. The justices have asked the NTA to clarify the protocols involved in addressing grievances related to these sheets, including whether there is a set timeline for providing them to the students.

During the proceedings, Justice Bhatti critiqued the involvement of coaching centers in the administrative aspects of educational assessments, stating, “Coaching centers, often seen as bagpipers, should limit their roles to providing coaching alone. They are not responsible for the administrative duties that fall within the purview of educational authorities like the NTA.”
