In an extraordinary conclusion to a legal journey spanning three decades, Lata Jain, now in her late 70s, has triumphed over the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to claim a plot of land currently valued at Rs 7 crore, for which she paid a mere Rs 50,000 in 1988.
Jain, aiming to establish a nursing home, found herself embroiled in a legal quagmire when the GDA declared the land under dispute and proposed a refund. Unyielding, Jain pursued justice through the state consumer forum, which ruled in her favor in 2009, a decision affirmed by the Allahabad High Court.
The matter escalated to the Supreme Court when the GDA contested the lower court’s ruling. However, on April 5, the apex court upheld the previous decisions, mandating the GDA to allocate Jain a 500 sqm plot in Nyay Khand 1, Indirapuram, at the 1988 rate of Rs 350 per sqm. Additionally, the court ordered the GDA to compensate Jain with Rs 1 lakh within two months.
Currently, with a market rate of Rs 1.3 lakh per sqm, the plot Jain is set to receive is worth approximately Rs 7 crore, yet her cost remains at the remarkably low figure of Rs 3.75 lakh.

Despite her deteriorating health and the original plans for a nursing home never materializing, Jain’s relentless pursuit of justice has prevailed. The GDA, having previously offered Jain alternative plots which she declined, has now committed to executing the Supreme Court’s order in their upcoming meeting scheduled for August 3.
