Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on PIL Addressing Cyber Crimes and Spam Calls

In a significant move addressing concerns over digital security, the Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Centre, seeking its response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that highlights an “enormous rise” in cyber crimes and the pervasive issue of unsolicited calls in India.

The bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations brought forth by Bengaluru resident Gowrishankar. The PIL calls for more stringent measures to tackle the growing challenges posed by cyber threats and spam communications.

The petition specifically urges the implementation of the Calling Name Presentation Service (CNAP) by telecom network operators. CNAP, a feature that enables the display of a caller’s name on the recipient’s phone, aims to enhance transparency and allow users to make better-informed decisions about incoming calls.

Recognizing the efforts of government agencies in combating these issues, the Supreme Court nevertheless emphasized the need for a coordinated response from the central government. “Yes, we understand the problem is there. Let the Centre respond,” the bench stated, highlighting the importance of addressing these concerns at a national level.
