Supreme Court Resolves Over 400 Cases on Opening Day of Special Lok Adalat

More than 400 pending cases were successfully settled on Friday as the Supreme Court launched a three-day Special Lok Adalat designed to resolve legal disputes through mutual agreement.

The exercise, running through August 23 as part of the apex court’s “Samadhan Samaroh” initiative, brought over 600 listed matters before 16 dedicated benches on its opening day. Each bench comprises two Supreme Court judges operating alongside senior advocates, advocates-on-record, and other legal practitioners.

Wide Range of Disputes Submitted for Settlement

The cases selected for the special sessions encompass a broad array of litigation currently pending before the top court. These include land acquisition and compensation disputes, matrimonial conflicts, property disagreements, motor accident claims, tax matters, and service and labour issues.

Structured Dialogue and Mediation Focus

Organized under the guidance of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, the initiative incorporates a pre-settlement mechanism that brings litigants and their legal counsel together to explore resolution options. The benches actively facilitate discussion between opposing parties to foster consent-based settlements as an alternative to extended courtroom battles.

The Supreme Court highlighted that the exercise reflects its ongoing efforts to integrate mediation and consensual dispute resolution into the broader justice delivery framework. The court noted that the process provides litigants with a direct avenue to conclude disputes amicably while helping reduce the burden of prolonged litigation on the judicial system.
