Attorney General of India Mr KK Venugopal was granted permission for initiation of contempt proceedings against stand up comedian Kunal Kamra over his new tweets on Chief Justice of India.
In his statement, Mr Venugopal stated that to deliberately insult the CJI was equal to insulting the Supreme Court itself.
He further stated that Kunal Kamra’s tweets were obnoxious and vulgar and were aimed at lowering the authority of the Supreme Court and also to break the confidence of the general public in the institution of the Supreme Court of India.
In short the Attorney General has given his consent u/s 15 of Contempt of Courts Act.
On 18.11.2020, Kamra had shared a picture of two fingers on Twitter and had stated that the middle finger was for CJI Bobde.
In a similar incident, on 12th November, the Attorney General had granted his consent for initiation of contempt proceeding against Kunal Kamra over his tweets about the Apex Court when interim bail was granted to journalist Arnab Goswami.
In his defence, Kamra had stated that silence of the Supreme Court on matters of personal liberty would not go uncriticized. He also stated that he would not apologise for his tweets, nor will he retract them.
