Karnataka HC Critiques Exorbitant Alimony Demand

A Karnataka High Court video has sparked widespread discussion after surfacing on social media platform X, showcasing a woman judge questioning a lawyer over his client’s substantial alimony demand of ₹6,16,300 per month during divorce proceedings.

The video captures the judge’s astonishment and critical questioning regarding the alimony requested by the woman from her soon-to-be ex-husband. The lawyer presented a detailed list of expenses his client claimed necessary, including high-end clothing, dining, and other personal expenditures.

During the session, the judge scrutinized the justification for such a high figure, emphasizing that the amount seemed excessive for a woman without dependents and highlighting the husband’s responsibilities towards their children. The judge remarked, “If she wants to spend, let her earn,” pointing out the need for rationality in financial demands during divorce settlements.
