The Delhi High Court on Friday declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition by the Indian Youth Congress challenging the Delhi Police’s refusal to permit a demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma refused to list the matter immediately despite repeated requests from the organization’s counsel. The judges questioned what urgency warranted taking up the plea on Friday and directed that the petition be listed for hearing on Monday.
The youth wing of the Congress party moved the high court after the Delhi Police issued an order barring it from staging a protest at Jantar Mantar. The outfit intended to demonstrate against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
The petition was initially mentioned before the court on Thursday and was mentioned once again on Friday morning. However, the bench declined the request for an expedited hearing and scheduled the proceedings for the upcoming week.
