The Jharkhand High Court has issued a directive to Dumka police for an immediate response regarding the gangrape of a Spanish tourist, marking a serious concern for the state’s law enforcement and international image. The court’s bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar, addressed the grievous incident, emphasizing the potential national and international consequences that such crimes against foreign nationals might entail, particularly on India’s tourism sector and global reputation.
The incident occurred in the Kurumahat area under Hansdiha police jurisdiction, approximately 300 kilometers from Ranchi, where the Spanish woman and her husband were camping overnight on Friday. The assault involved seven individuals, with three suspects already apprehended by the police. The High Court’s stern reminder about the adverse effects of sexual crimes against foreign women on India’s image underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency for a thorough investigation and response.
The victim, along with her husband, is on an extensive tour across Asia, having traveled from Pakistan to Bangladesh before arriving in India with plans to continue their journey to Nepal. Currently, the woman is receiving medical care at the Saraiyahat Community Health Centre, while the legal proceedings and investigation into the tragic event unfold.
