Delhi High Court Seeks ECI Reply on Jan Sangh’s Plea for Common Symbol in Bihar Polls

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the response of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on a plea filed by the Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh (ABJS), seeking allotment of a common election symbol for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.

Justice Mini Pushkarna issued a notice to the ECI on the petition and granted it time to submit a reply. The matter will be next heard on August 19.

ABJS, represented by advocates Pranay Ranjan and Mrigank Prabhakar, argued that the party has a long electoral history since its establishment in 1951, having been renamed in 1979, and has regularly contested elections. The petitioners pointed out that the party was allotted the “sitar” symbol for the 2024 assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and now seeks to contest the upcoming Bihar polls under the same symbol.

According to the plea, the party wrote to the ECI on June 2, 2025, requesting a common symbol for the Bihar assembly elections under the ABJS banner. However, the party claims it received no response. A reminder was sent on July 4, 2025, but it too went unanswered.
