Allahabad High Court Set to Hear Plea for Assets Probe Against Rahul Gandhi on May 12

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court is scheduled to hear a petition on May 12 seeking a formal investigation into the assets of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former Congress president. The plea alleges that the senior politician holds assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The matter came before a bench consisting of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Justice Zafeer Ahmad. During the upcoming session on May 12, the court is expected to focus primarily on the “maintainability” of the plea—a crucial legal step that determines whether the court has the jurisdiction and valid grounds to hear the case further.

The petition was originally moved on April 25 by S Vignesh Shishir, identified as a BJP worker hailing from Karnataka. While the bench deliberated on the matter this Wednesday, the formal order was not immediately available on the court’s official website. However, latest updates to the court’s digital registry now confirm the mid-May date for the admission hearing.

The legal challenge seeks to involve multiple high-level federal and state agencies. The petition names several prominent respondents, including:

  • The Central Government
  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED)
  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)
  • The Uttar Pradesh Police
  • The Director of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO)

The petitioner is calling for these agencies to initiate a probe into the financial holdings of the Congress leader. As the court prepares to hear arguments on the admissibility of the case, the focus remains on whether the petitioner has provided sufficient legal standing to warrant such an investigation.
