The Allahabad High Court has deferred proceedings regarding a legal plea seeking an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) inspection of the Wazukhana section inside the Gyanvapi mosque premises until October 6, 2026.
Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal ordered the postponement after being informed that the Supreme Court is currently reviewing the matter. With the apex court scheduled to hold its next hearing on September 15, 2026, the High Court chose to hold off on its decision and schedule the revision petition alongside related matters for early October.
Supreme Court Review Prompts Deferral
The revision petition under review was submitted by Rakhi Singh, one of the litigants in the Shringar Gauri worship suit pending before a Varanasi court. The filing challenges an October 21, 2023 directive by the Varanasi District Judge, which turned down requests to mandate an ASI technical survey of the mosque’s ablution area.
Contested Structure Excluded From Survey Request
The requested survey specifically omits the disputed structure situated within the Wazukhana. The Hindu parties in the litigation identify the structure as a Shivlinga, while the Muslim side contends that it is a fountain.
