The Madras High Court has dismissed a writ petition filed by TVK chief and actor Vijay, challenging a ₹1.5 crore penalty imposed by the Income Tax Department for alleged non-disclosure of additional income in the assessment year 2016–17.
The Madras High Court on Friday rejected a writ petition filed by actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay against a ₹1.50 crore penalty order issued by the Income Tax Department.
The case stems from the department’s finding that Vijay had failed to disclose additional income earned during the financial year 2015–16. The penalty was levied following assessment proceedings which reportedly unearthed undeclared income, resulting in the imposition of the fine under relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act.
Vijay had moved the High Court in 2022 challenging the legality of the penalty order, contending that due process had not been followed and that the assessment was flawed. The matter came up before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, who had reserved orders in the case last month.
Dismissing the writ petition on Friday, the court upheld the stand of the Income Tax Department and ruled that no grounds had been made out to interfere with the penalty order.
Further details of the judgment are awaited, including whether Vijay will pursue the matter before appellate forums.
