Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday underlined the need for judges to actively pursue recreational activities, saying that their long working hours and the demanding nature of judicial work make regular recreation vital for overall well-being.
Speaking to reporters at the opening ceremony of the All India Judges Badminton Championship in Delhi, the Chief Justice said judges should choose activities suited to their age and fitness but must make them a part of their routine.
He said the daily workload of judges is intense and often leaves little time for rest. “The working hours of judges are long and the nature of their work is very stressful. Sitting hours are long. All judges should participate in a recreational activity and make it a habit. Recreation is needed to recharge them,” the CJI said.
Justice Kant also appreciated the strong participation from High Court judges in the event, noting that it reflected growing awareness within the judiciary about maintaining good health. “High Court judges are participating in this event in large numbers. It shows that they are conscious about their health and well-being,” he added.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and several Supreme Court judges attended the inaugural ceremony.
The two-day badminton championship is being held at the Thyagraj Sports Complex. The closing ceremony and prize distribution on Sunday will be presided over by former Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai along with Justice Vikram Nath. The event is being organised by former international badminton player Abantika Deka.
