The Rajasthan High Court has directed the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS) to constitute an expert panel to examine whether an MBBS student, who lost her vision completely in a road accident, can be permitted to continue and complete her medical education.
Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand issued the order on August 12 while hearing a petition filed by Ankita Singodia, who was rendered 100% blind after a severe head injury in an April 7, 2017 accident. Singodia had joined the MBBS course in August 2014 and successfully completed her first and second years before the accident.
Following the loss of her vision, she was barred from continuing her studies, with authorities citing the course’s practical training requirements in surgery and other clinical procedures. Challenging this decision, she approached the high court seeking permission to resume her course.

The court asked RUHS to form a committee to explore feasible methodologies and modalities that could enable her to complete the remaining portion of her MBBS programme.
Her counsel, advocate Sahilesh Prakash Sharma, pointed out that a medical board in June 2020 had recommended allowing her to continue, but a subsequent board later concluded she would not be able to effectively discharge a doctor’s duties.
