A special MP-MLA court on Wednesday adjourned till July 14 the hearing in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged objectionable remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign.
The case was initiated by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, who accused Gandhi of making defamatory statements targeting Shah. The matter was scheduled for examination of a witness today; however, the hearing had to be deferred as the witness failed to appear, according to Mishra’s counsel Santosh Kumar Pandey.
The court had earlier issued a warrant against Gandhi in December 2023. He subsequently surrendered before the court in February 2024 and was granted bail on furnishing two sureties of ₹25,000 each.

On July 26, 2024, Gandhi appeared in court and recorded his statement, denying the charges and asserting that the case was politically motivated.
The court will now resume proceedings on July 14, with the pending witness examination expected to take place.
