“I Want to Die, My Friends, I Need Rest Now”: Former Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju Writes Emotional Post

Former Supreme Court judge and ex-Chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice Markandey Katju, sparked widespread concern on Monday with an emotionally charged post on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In a statement that quickly went viral, Justice Katju wrote:

“I want to die, my friends. I have done my duty to my country, and now I need rest.”

The post, shared from his official handle, immediately drew a flurry of reactions ranging from support and empathy to confusion and alarm. Known for his often satirical and provocative social media presence, many users questioned whether the message was part of his usual sardonic style or an expression of genuine emotional distress.

Public Reaction Mixed

Justice Katju’s post triggered a stream of responses across social media. Some users expressed deep concern and urged him to seek support, while others speculated whether the post had been made in jest. “Is this another one of Justice Katju’s ironic takes or a serious cry for help?” asked one user, echoing the sentiment of many.

A Controversial Public Figure

Justice Katju, born on September 20, 1946, in Lucknow, is widely known for his outspoken opinions and unfiltered commentary. Over the years, he has garnered a significant following for his blunt remarks on socio-political matters and judiciary-related issues.

He began his legal career at the Allahabad High Court in 1970, eventually serving as a permanent judge there. He later became Chief Justice of the Madras and Delhi High Courts before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 2006. During his tenure at the apex court, he was recognised for disposing of a remarkably high number of cases weekly—reportedly over 100.

In one notable instance, he remarked that “90% of Indians are fools,” citing their susceptibility to manipulation on the basis of religion and caste—a comment that sparked widespread backlash.

A Legacy of Outspokenness

Justice Katju comes from a distinguished lineage. His father, Justice Shiva Nath Katju, served on the bench of the Allahabad High Court, while his grandfather, Kailash Nath Katju, held high political offices including Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Governor of West Bengal and Odisha.
