In a significant ruling, a Delhi court has convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for his role in the murders of two individuals during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The conviction pertains to the killings in the Saraswati Vihar area on November 1, 1984, just days after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja issued the conviction order and scheduled the sentencing arguments for February 18. Kumar, who was brought from Tihar jail for the pronouncement, faces charges related to the deaths of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh.
The case, initially registered at Punjabi Bagh police station, was later handed over to a special investigation team due to the complexities involved. On December 16, 2021, the court formally charged Kumar after finding “prima facie” evidence against him.

According to the prosecution, a large mob, armed with deadly weapons, engaged in widespread looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties to retaliate against the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The mob allegedly targeted the house of Jaswant Singh, resulting in the brutal killings of Singh and his son, alongside significant property damage.
