Calcutta High Court to Consider Request for New Probe in RG Kar Hospital Doctor’s Case

The Calcutta High Court has been approached by the parents of a doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking a re-investigation into the case. The plea for a fresh probe comes amid dissatisfaction with the current progress and outcomes of the investigation, which has already sparked widespread protests and calls for justice.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, hearing the plea, instructed the family’s lawyer to include the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a respondent in the petition. The matter has been scheduled for further mention before the court on the coming Monday.

The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found deceased on August 9 in the seminar room of the hospital, leading to immediate outrage and demand for accountability. Subsequent legal developments saw RG Kar Medical College’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, and the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, being granted bail by the Sealdah court on December 13. Their release on bail was facilitated by the CBI’s inability to file charge sheets within the statutory 90-day period, as argued by their defense.

While Sandip Ghosh has been implicated in evidence tampering related to the incident, Abhijit Mondal has been criticized for delays in filing the initial FIR following the discovery of the doctor’s body. Meanwhile, the CBI has already filed a charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the case. Roy, a civic volunteer working with local police, allegedly committed the crime during a break when the victim was resting in the seminar room.
