The Madras High Court has given its approval for the BJP’s ‘Tiranga Rally’ to proceed across Tamil Nadu on Independence Day, overturning a previous prohibition by local law enforcement on such activities. The court’s decision ensures that the rally, which includes motorcycle and bicycle processions, as well as marches featuring the national flag, can be conducted under specified conditions.
Justice G Jayachandran ruled on the matter following a plea by A Krishna Prasath, the Coimbatore district secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha, who contested the decision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kovai North, which had denied permission for a 200-motorcycle rally planned in Coimbatore. The court’s ruling not only affects Coimbatore but extends to all regions of the state.
The stipulations laid out by the court emphasize respect for the Indian tricolour and mandate that the rally should not disrupt public order or cause inconvenience. Participants are required to inform local authorities about the rally’s route, the number of participants, and its timing to facilitate appropriate police protection.
In his petition, Prasath argued that the rally aimed to foster awareness among the youth about the importance of Independence Day and to honor the memory of freedom fighters. He asserted that the event was designed to educate the younger generation about the sacrifices made during Indiaโs freedom struggle.
