In a distressing incident from Rupaidiha, a village in Uttar Pradesh, a woman named Bano was subjected to triple talaq by her husband, Hazrat Ali, after dowry demands for a motorcycle and one lakh in cash were not met. The couple, who hailed from the same village and had married out of love, found themselves embroiled in a dowry dispute shortly after their marriage, leading to the wife’s expulsion from her marital home.
The love story turned sour when Bano became pregnant, prompting the couple to marry in court on October 15, 2022. However, the joy of their newborn daughter was overshadowed by escalating demands for dowry from Bano’s husband and in-laws. Despite Bano’s pleas citing her family’s financial incapacity to meet the demands, the harassment intensified, culminating in her being physically assaulted and evicted from her home in early January.
Left with no choice, Bano sought refuge in her parental home with her daughter. On January 24, Hazrat Ali confronted her at her parental home’s doorstep and unilaterally pronounced triple talaq before departing. Despite Bano’s initial complaints, local police were reluctant to register the case until intervention from the Superintendent of Police led to the filing of charges under the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act against Hazrat Ali and three others.
SHO Shamsher Bahadur Singh confirmed that the case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
