Supreme Court Round-Up for Thursday

Important cases heard in Supreme Court on December 14, Thursday:

* The SC conditionally suspended the conviction of former BSP MP Afzal Ansari in a 2007 Gangsters Act case.

* The SC dismissed the bail plea of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s deputy secretary Saumya Chaurasia, who is an accused in an alleged coal levy scam money laundering case.

* Several rounds of talks have been held in order to formulate guidelines for seizure of electronic devices like mobile phones and laptops of individuals, especially those from the media, in the course of criminal investigations, the Centre told the SC.

* The SC refused to entertain the Delhi government’s plea challenging Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena’s decision to terminate the services of all civil defence volunteers working as marshals in DTC buses.

* The SC extended till January 8 the interim bail granted to former Delhi minister Satyendar Kumar Jain in a money laundering case.

* “It is very easy to fling allegations and letters,” an anguished Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said, while clarifying that the bail plea of AAP leader Satyendar Kumar Jain in a money laundering case was listed before a bench headed by Justice Bela M Trivedi as Justice A S Bopanna was unavailable due to illness.
