Supreme Court Round-Up for Friday

Important cases heard by the Supreme Court on Friday, Jul 7:

*SC agreed to hear on July 10 a plea challenging the decision of the Varanasi district magistrate to order demolition of a building of the Sarva Sewa Sangh, a society which works to propagate Gandhian values.

* In a jolt to low-cost airlines SpiceJet, SC refused to extend the time for making payment to media baron Kalanidhi Maran and his Kal Airways in pursuance of an arbitral award of Rs 578 crore related to a share-transfer dispute, saying these are “luxury” litigations.

*SC refused to entertain a plea seeking directions to protect complainants and witnesses in sexual harassment at workplace cases from victimisation or retaliation by accused persons or organisations involved.

*SC sought a response from Ghaziabad’s Dasna Devi temple priest Yati Narsinghanand in a contempt petition filed against him for alleged derogatory remarks made by him against the top court last year.

*SC said it will hear on July 14 the cross-pleas of Google and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) challenging the verdict of an appellate tribunal in a case related to Google’s alleged anti-competitive practices in the Android mobile device case.

*SC refused to entertain a plea for directions to declare that divorce to Muslim women without arbitration is void and seeking steps for rehabilitation of their children.

*SC provisionally allowed candidates, who were barred for not furnishing the credential certificate in appropriate format, to appear in Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Examination and directed the State Public Service Commission to issue admit cards to them.

*SC dismissed a plea challenging the Constitutional validity of Section 28 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
