Delhi High Court Round-Up for July 6

Important cases heard in Delhi High Court on Thursday, July 6:

* HC favoured closing a 2018 contempt case by a lawyers’ body against S Gurumurthy, the editor of a Chennai-based Tamil news magazine, for his tweet against a judge.

* HC has upheld the dismissal of a CRPF constable from service for consuming liquor during duty hours and misbehaving with another personnel by pointing a loaded gun at him while being in an inebriated state, saying his misconduct left no scope for leniency.

* Cautioning against the use of public interest litigations for private malice, the HC has said the attractive brand name of PIL should not be used for “suspicious products of mischief” but redress of genuine public harm.

* It is an anathema in this age to diminish the autonomous status of a woman by treating her merely as an “adjunct” to her husband, the HC said while holding a woman to be the sole and absolute owner of a property.

* HC has sought response of the state government and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) and Delhi University (DU) on a plea challenging the eligibility criteria for NEET (UG) aspirants to claim Delhi state quota seats in medical colleges affiliated with the two varsities here.
