[BREAKING] SC reserves verdict on sentence against Prashant Bhushan

-After hearing SC reserved verdict on sentence of Prashant Bhushan

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra adjourned hearing in 2009 contempt case against Bhushan to September 10.

-SC bench agrees to refer to a appropriate bench the question of conflict between right to free speech and suo motu contempt powers of court in the 2009 contempt case against activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan, which was initiated for calling half of 16 former CJIs ‘corrupt’.

SC is to consider on 2009 contempt case as well. It seeks to examine if a statement of corruption by particular
Judge(s) is permissible, under what circumstances and on what
basis, and safeguards, if any.

–Supreme Court starts hearing the 2009 contempt case against Prashant Bhushan. Rajeev Dhavan for Bhushan says notice should be issued to Attorney General so that an independent opinion on the matter can be obtained. He also says matter should be heard by a Constitution Bench.

–Supreme Court is to consider on Aug 25 a 2009 contempt case against Prashant Bhushan as well. It seeks to examine if a statement of corruption by particular Judge(s) is permissible, under what circumstances and on what basis, and safeguards, if any.
