Supreme Court Seeks Status Report on Infrastructure at CAT Jammu

The Supreme Court has called for an immediate status report from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in Jammu, highlighting concerns over inadequate infrastructure impacting its operations. The directive came from a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, who emphasized the need for the tribunal to function efficiently without further delays.

The bench noted that the lack of supporting staff and appropriate facilities has hindered the CAT’s functionality. To address these issues, the court has asked the senior-most or in-charge Judicial Member of the Jammu Bench to provide a detailed report outlining the short-term needs essential for daily operations. This move is intended to ensure that the tribunal’s functioning is not compromised.

During the proceedings, the court acknowledged efforts by the Union Territory’s Estates Department to locate suitable premises for the tribunal. A building in Channi, Jammu, has been selected and equipped with necessary facilities, including two courtrooms, four chambers for members, and additional spaces for office and staff. These developments suggest progress, but the Supreme Court’s request for a status report indicates a need for further enhancements.
