Supreme Court Questions Maharashtra Authority Over Controversial Demolition Following Cricket Match Incident

The Supreme Court has called for a response from Maharashtra authorities concerning a plea that accuses them of contempt related to the demolition of a residential and commercial property in Sindhudurg district. The demolition occurred after allegations arose about anti-India slogans being chanted during a cricket match between India and Pakistan in the recent Champions Trophy.

The bench, led by Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih, has issued a notice regarding the plea and set the hearing for four weeks from now. The petitioner contends that the demolition was not only unwarranted but also executed without adhering to the procedural safeguards mandated by the Supreme Court.

The core of the petitioner’s argument lies in the alleged breach of the apex court’s November 13, 2024, verdict which established nationwide guidelines on property demolition. These guidelines explicitly prohibit the destruction of any property without first issuing a show cause notice and granting a 15-day period for the property owner to respond.
