The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea in the excise policy case until September 5, directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit its response within a week, according to Bar and Bench.
Kejriwal, who is currently in judicial custody regarding the CBI case, had previously secured bail in a related Enforcement Directorate (ED) case under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. His legal team, led by Senior Advocate A M Singhvi, argued for interim bail, highlighting the peculiarity of receiving bail in the ED case but remaining detained under the CBI’s charges.
On August 14, the apex court had declined to grant interim bail, prompting further discussions and the recent postponement. Singhvi described the situation as “strange,” emphasizing the anomaly in Kejriwal’s legal circumstances.
Amidst these legal proceedings, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has initiated a new campaign titled ‘Kejriwal aayenge’ as they gear up for the 2025 Assembly elections. AAP National General Secretary (Organisation) and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak expressed optimism about Kejriwal’s potential release, stating, “Delhiites are eagerly awaiting their CM’s release. Ever since Kejriwal’s arrest, many initiatives in Delhi have been halted. People are confident that after his release, all the stalled works will be completed and pending issues will be resolved swiftly.”
