*The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea that sought the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, relating to a tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The plea was rejected on grounds that it fell outside the judiciary’s scope.
The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and including Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, sharply criticized the lawyer for overstepping legal boundaries by mixing political demands with judicial processes. Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the court’s focus on judicial matters, not political ordeals, stating, “This is not a political forum. You are a member of the bar. We do not require your affirmation of what we say. What you say has to abide by the rules of legal discipline.”
The justices clarified that the demands involving political figures’ resignations do not align with the Supreme Court’s functions. “We are not here to see what you feel about a political functionary. We are dealing with the specific grievances of the doctors. If you ask me to direct that CM should resign, that’s not part of our remit,” the bench added.
