Amid swirling speculations surrounding the proposed transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma, the Supreme Court of India has issued a formal statement to dispel what it termed as “misinformation and rumours” relating to recent developments.
“There is misinformation and rumours being spread with regard to the incident at the residence of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma,” the Court said in a strongly worded clarification issued on Thursday.
Justice Yashwant Varma, currently the second senior-most judge of the Delhi High Court and a member of its Collegium, is proposed to be transferred to his parent High Court — the Allahabad High Court — where he would rank ninth in seniority.

The Supreme Court emphasized that the proposal for his transfer is “independent and separate from the In-house enquiry procedure”, indicating that the move should not be linked to any other parallel developments or speculations.
The statement further revealed that the matter was thoroughly considered by the Supreme Court Collegium — comprising the Chief Justice of India and the four senior-most judges — on March 20, 2025. Following deliberations, letters were sent to the consultee judges of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justices of the concerned High Courts, and Justice Varma himself.
The Court confirmed that all responses received will be carefully examined, and only thereafter will the Collegium pass a formal resolution on the matter.
