Supreme Court Announces New Roster From 4th January 2021

The Supreme Court has notified a new roster determining the allocation of new cases to its various Benches, which will come into effect on 04.01.2021 when the Court opens after winter break.

The new roster is somewhat identical to the roster that was notified back in October.

According to the new roster, a Bench headed by CJI, Hon’ble Justice Ramana, Hon’ble Justice Nariman, Hon’ble Justice Lalit, Hon’ble Justice Khanwalkar, Hon’ble Justice DY Chandrachud, Hon’ble Justice Ashok Bhushan and Hon’ble Justice Nageswara Rao will deal with letter petitions and PILs.

A Bench headed by only the CJI will deal with Habeas Corpus petitions, Social Justice matters, and Election Matters.

The CJI and Hon’ble Justice UU Lalit will deal with contempt of court cases.

A Bench headed by Hon’ble Justice NV Ramana, Hon’ble Justice UU Lalit, Hon’ble Justice Ashok Bhushan and Hon’ble Justice DY CHandrachud will deal with Religious and Charitable Endowment Matters.

The CJI, Hon’ble Justice Ramana, Hon’ble Justice R F Nariman, Hon’ble Justice Indu Malhotra Hon’ble Justice Indira Banerjee and take up all arbitration matters.

The new subject-wise roster system was introduced by former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra in February 2018 after he was accused of assigning cases to particular Benches rather than considering judges’ seniority while assigning cases.
