State should consider vaccinating third genders on a priority basis: Madras HC

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on Monday remarked that the State Govt. should vaccinate transgender people taking into consideration their vulnerable condition in the society.

A petition was filed before the Madras High Court seeking covid cash relief to be given to transgender people too. The HC on the previous date had directed the state govt. to look into the issue and take appropriate steps.

Consequently, the Government sanctioned the first spell of Covid cash relief to all rice family cardholders including 2956 ‘third genders’ who possess family cards.

The Government has also decided to distribute cash relief of Rs.2,000/- per beneficiary to 8,493 ‘third genders’ who do not have ration cards but are registered with the Third Gender Welfare Board.

The second issue in the petition was regarding the vaccination of the Third Genders. The petitioner sought inclusion of the Third Genders in the vaccination drive taken up the state.

The Court observed that “Considering the vulnerability of such persons, it is hoped that the State will consider vaccinating transgenders on a priority basis, particularly since the number of transgenders may not be many.”
