Six Vice-Chancellors Appointed in West Bengal, Five More Expected Soon, Supreme Court Informed

The Supreme Court was briefed on Monday that the Governor of West Bengal, C V Ananda Bose, has appointed six full-term vice-chancellors for state universities, with five additional appointments anticipated shortly. This update was provided by Attorney General R Venkataramani during a hearing before a bench consisting of Justices Surya Kant and Manmohan.

The appointments come from a list of 11 candidates approved by the Governor, who also serves as the chancellor of state-aided universities. The selection was facilitated by a search-cum-selection committee led by former Chief Justice of India U U Lalit. The Attorney General noted that while the names of six vice-chancellors have already been officially notified by the state government, the remaining five are expected to be cleared within the next couple of days.

This development is part of an ongoing effort to fill key academic positions in the state, which saw the Supreme Court step in July to appoint the former CJI to head the selection panel amid disputes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party and Governor Bose regarding the governance of universities.
