A public interest litigation (PIL) was lodged in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, challenging the detention of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and approximately 120 other individuals. These detentions occurred at the Delhi border as they were participating in a march to the capital demanding constitutional protections for Ladakh.
The case was brought to the attention of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, with the petitioner’s counsel requesting an urgent listing. However, the court did not list the matter for immediate hearing but scheduled it for October 3, provided the submissions are in order by 3:30 pm on that day.
Sonam Wangchuk, alongside supporters from the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), embarked on this march as part of a broader four-year agitation. Their demands include granting statehood to Ladakh, incorporating the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, initiating an early recruitment process with a dedicated public service commission, and establishing separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts.
