Patanjali Apologizes Unconditionally After Supreme Court’s Stern Warning on Misleading Advertisements

Following the Supreme Court’s stringent remarks concerning misleading advertisements related to the medical efficacy of its products, Patanjali Ayurveda has issued an unconditional apology. The apology came in the wake of ongoing proceedings regarding misleading advertisements, wherein Patanjali’s MD, Acharya Balkrishna, submitted an affidavit expressing regret and seeking forgiveness for the advertisements in question. The Supreme Court had previously ordered Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna to appear in court by April 2nd.

Prior to this development, the Supreme Court had ordered Baba Ramdev and the company’s Managing Director, Acharya Balkrishna, to appear in court by April 2nd for contempt proceedings related to the misleading advertisements. Following the Supreme Court’s firm stance, Patanjali presented an affidavit to the apex court.

The bench, comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, expressed strong objections to Patanjali and Acharya Balkrishna for failing to respond to the court’s earlier notices. They were questioned why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for breaching the court’s commitment.

In his affidavit, Acharya Balkrishna expressed regret over the advertisement that raised doubts about certain statements. The advertisements issued by the company claimed to completely cure conditions like BP, sugar, asthma, and other diseases.

The Supreme Court is hearing a petition by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) accusing Baba Ramdev of running a campaign against the COVID vaccination drive and modern medicines.

The court deemed it appropriate to issue a show-cause notice to Baba Ramdev as the advertisements released by Patanjali, dated November 21, 2023, were the subject of an affidavit presented in court. It appears that these were endorsed by Baba Ramdev himself, prompting the court’s action.
