In a unique and controversial case from Indore, children have taken legal action against their own parents for restricting their access to television and mobile devices. The case, which could potentially result in a seven-year sentence for the parents, is currently under judicial review after reaching the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
The dispute began when a 21-year-old daughter and her 8-year-old brother filed a complaint at the Chandan Nagar police station against their parents. The complaint led to charges under the Juvenile Justice Act, citing excessive scolding and physical discipline concerning the use of mobile phones and television by the children.
The High Court intervened after the parents challenged the legality of the trial initiated by the CJM (MP/MLA) court in Rampur on October 25, 2021. The High Court has temporarily halted the lower court’s proceedings, following an appeal that highlighted daily reprimands over gadget usage which the parents described as a common concern in many households.
The children are currently residing with their aunt, following their FIR against their parents. This living arrangement also surfaced in court documents, illustrating a broader family dispute involving the father and his sister.
