In a significant breach of law enforcement protocol, a 22-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday in the Koparkhairne area of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, for allegedly stealing crucial police investigation equipment and subsequently erasing its data. This incident has posed serious concerns regarding the security of police operations.
According to Senior Inspector Audhumbar Patil of the Koparkhairne police station, the accused, along with a juvenile, was initially detained on May 17 following a street altercation. During their interrogation at the police station, the man reportedly took advantage of the situation to steal a “yatharta kit,” which is essential for crime scene investigations, and fled the scene.
The theft led to the deletion of all data in the kit, which contained comprehensive evidence from various criminal investigations. The loss of such critical data could significantly hamper ongoing and future police investigations.
The individual, who is known to the police as a habitual offender with a history of involvement in house-breaking thefts, has now been charged under sections 380 (theft) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
