Marriage Between Hindu Boy and Muslim Girl Without Conversion Not Valid; Can Live as Live-in Couple

The Punjab and Haryana High Court, while hearing a plea for grant of protection to interfaith couple observed that marriage between Hindu Man and Muslim Woman would not be valid, in absence of conversion of woman to Hindu Religion  before the marriage as per Hindu rites.

Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and Punjab and Haryana High Court held that the couple would be entitled to live like a live-in-relationship couple and entitled to protection for that only.

The Court also referred to the Judgment of Supreme Court in the case of Nandakumar and another vs State of Kerala and Others and disposed of the Petition with the direction to the SP, Ambala City to look into the grievances of the petitioners and take appropriate measures to protect the life and liberty of couple, as may be warranted by the circumstances.
